Junior Primary School for Boys (Grade 1 - 3)

A FOUNDATION FOR LEARNING

Our Junior Primary School has highly motivated, qualified and committed teachers who, through experience and knowledge, understand the unique learning requirements of young boys and work collaboratively to inspire them to reach their full potential.

We believe children learn best by engaging with content in a meaningful context and allow opportunities for this within a safe, caring, family-orientated environment. A boy who experiences positive emotions is more willing to take risks, engage in social interactions and pursue their goals.

LEARNING TO THINK FOR YOURSELF

In an environment that fosters exploration, challenges and resilience, learning transcends traditional boundaries.

The Singapore Maths Curriculum used in the Junior Primary, not only emphasizes problem-solving and critical thinking but develops a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The intentional progression of concepts and early exposure lay a strong foundation that supports more complex learning later on.

The Time2Read methodology focuses on the development of strong auditory skills. Adopting this approach allows our boys to forge a deep understanding between symbols and sounds. A strong phonemic awareness gives meaning to the spelling and reading process.

THE WONDER YEARS

The Junior Primary years are happy, vibrant and active years. Our boys are given opportunities to grow a love for learning beyond the classroom in the form of excursions and visitors to our schools who teach them about weird and wacky creatures and social responsibilities.

We enrich our boys’ perspectives through chapel assemblies, outreach projects, and community-building activities. Family is a priority at St Charles College, and we embrace and seek to strengthen these bonds and sense of belonging through our Grandparents Day, Mornings with Mum, and Fathers’ Day fun.

Our cultural programme includes drama and music lessons with a strong focus on self-expression. The opportunity to learn to play the violin and ukelele enhance their creativity, skills and appreciation of the arts.

Sport and Brain Breaks are a wonderful part of belonging to St Charles College. We believe it is important to maintain an educational perspective – to not only enhance individual performance but also contribute to the integrity of sport.

We begin with a 30-minute Brain Break programme, three times a week during the school day. Here, boys get to take on a wide variety of game-based activities and challenges which develop coordination, balance, spatial awareness and strength.

We also have four sports practices per week where we cover a variety of sporting codes, allowing boys to be immersed in a culture that fosters a love for all sports. A progressive pathway into team games will enable boys to improve their motor skills and at the same time, their social skills. As the boys become part of a team, they learn to trust and rely on teammates to achieve collective goals. Our nurturing and well-qualified coaches assist in developing boys with healthy self-esteem by recognizing and acknowledging all contributions of great effort.
